Get 6 Elements of a Perfect Descriptive Narrative Essay

Descriptive narrative essays are a popular type of assignment. If you haven’t had to deal with it in high school, your English 101 professor will probably ask you to write one during your freshman year. One of the reasons why this genre of writing is so popular is that it is very broad and can be used to do anything from storytelling to constructing narratives about nature.

Know Your Assignment

What subgenre did your professor chose for you? Is it a memoir essay that gives you an opportunity to describe event that happened to you in the past? Is it a more literary narrative where you can rely on your imagination? Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification.

Choose a Rocking Topic

Whatever subject you choose, you’ll have to spend a considerable amount of time working on it, so choose something you can be excited about. However, it is of great importance that not only you, but also potential readers well be interested in the chosen topic. You should choose the one that is not only catching but unique too, in order to write an original essay. A very small number of people can make a trip to a deli seem engaging.

Keep Structure in Mind

Formal essays demand structure. The rules for the descriptive narrative essays are much more flexible than those for the argumentative or cause and effect ones, but some requirements should be kept to. Any essay should have a clearly stated thesis and defined paragraphs. Otherwise, go wild.

Language

Even if you have the best ideas in the world, potential readers will not be able to appreciate them fully if the language that you use to express them is stilted and inadequate. Use a lot of action words. Try figurative writing. You can even try to draw word trees as you did in elementary school. Do whatever you need to find the right words.

Rules of Narrative

Any good narration has a conflict at its core. Make sure to explain the origins of the issue to readers and then proceed to describe the reactions of the people involved. If appropriate, finish with a resolution and evaluation. Once done, try to reread your essay or get a review from a friend. Edit accordingly.

Conclusion

A conclusion comprises evaluation and reflection. Describe how you or your characters felt after all the events that transpired. A good idea would be to generalize the experience. Tie your feelings to universal concepts, such as love, forgiveness, success, etc. This can help the readers connect to your story and emphasize better.

Even if the descriptive narrative essay is your first piece of writing, don’t be afraid. It is not that different from making a diary entry or writing a short story. Ask your professor for assistance if there is a necessity and apply our practical tips to progress!
